ABOUT

The funniest play about depression you'll ever see

The list began after her first attempt.  A list of everything brilliant about the world.  Everything worth living for:

1. Ice cream.
2. Water fights.
3. Staying up past your bedtime and being allowed to watch TV.
4. The color yellow.
5. Things with stripes.
6. Rollercoasters.

It’s a story that’s as heartwarming as it is discussion-worthy, and it’ll leave theatre-goers better off for having experienced it.

The play was written by Duncan Macmillan and Jonny Donahoe and originated at Britain's Ludlow Fringe Festival in 2013.  It has been performed at New York City’s Barrow Street Theatre and was recently the subject of an HBO documentary.  The Guardian called the play “Heart-wrenching, hilarious... possibly one of the funniest plays you'll ever see, full stop.”

“The intimate nature of our 100+ seat theatre, combined with the immersive storytelling in this play is a formula for a beautiful production,” said James R. Kuhl, Tipping Point’s Producing Artistic Director and one of two actors that will take the stage for the run of the show.  The second actor, Katherine Banks, presents the same script, allowing for a different take on the role and an opportunity for audiences to enjoy this wonderful tale from a female storyteller.

REVIEWS

"There are many reasons to see this Tipping Point Theatre production – the laughs, the relevance of the message, the fine acting. If for no other reason, take a friend or loved one to be reminded of the innumerable brilliant things that grace our lives. This play will help you see them. And here’s the trick – they’re everywhere."

-Patrice Nolan, Encore Michigan

"'Every Brilliant Thing' may be the most singularly affecting play you will see this year, not only because of the message it contains, but in the way it is presented."

-Daniel Skora, it's All Theatre

"Kuhl’s performance was marked by his extraordinary acting skills and his big heart; both were evident as he went from naïve boy to cynical teenager to hopeful romantic to melancholy adult."

-By Ronelle Grier, The Oakland Press

"So, yes, this is a story speckled with sadness. Yet it's also filled with genuine, heart-warming laughs. Ultimately, though, Every Brilliant Thing is an uplifting and hope-filled tale brilliantly told that shows us the resiliency of the human spirit. And it's one that theatergoers won't soon forget."

-Donald V. Calamia, The Cranky Critic
