Producing Artistic Director

Tipping Point Theatre is an intimate professional theatre (SPT4), located in the heart of beautiful Northville, Michigan. We are proud of our 15 years of high-quality productions, outreach partnerships, and special events. We provide our audiences with thought provoking and inspirational theatre that celebrates the complex and beautiful realities of humanity. Currently, Tipping Point Theatre is looking for a Producing Artistic Director (PAD), to further our commitment to provide quality theatre experiences. We are seeking a highly motivated individual with infinite passion and drive to lead and collaborate in an exceptionally creative environment.

Job Description:

ARTISTIC & PRODUCTION

  • Select the season and programming

  • Direct at minimum one play each season with the option to direct additional plays with Board of Directors’ (BOD) consideration

  • Supervise and support outside directors who direct the other plays of the season

  • Supervise all productions of the Company

  • Scout for new scripts and talent 

  • Staff all public performances and events

ADMINISTRATIVE

  • Participate in BOD meetings, coordinate and participate in strategic planning, presenting weekly updates and financial status as needed

  • Customer Relations Management (CRM) database experience (Salsa, etc.)

  • Oversee the maintenance of the theatre, office, lobby, theatre space, bathrooms, theatre grounds, general cleanliness

  • Maintain effective safety and security programs for staff, artists and audiences

  • Answer phones, check and return messages, and take ticket orders

FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT & HUMAN RESOURCES

  • Develop, oversee, and execute the annual operating budget in cooperation with the BOD

  • Negotiate all contracts

  • Hire, supervise and manage staff including quarterly checkpoints and annual reviews

  • Hiring of contractors, consultants, interns and volunteers

DEVELOPMENT

  • Coordinate fundraisers to cultivate individual, government, foundation and corporate donors

  • Grant and report-writing

  • Maintain strong relationships with donors

  • Oversee fundraising through annual appeals, marketing and relationship development; fundraising events

  • Get to know local community and have visibility in Northville and surrounding communities

  • Continue to develop Outreach Programs

MARKETING

  • Design strategies that develop strong group, single and seasonal ticket sales

  • Cultivate strategic partnerships through public appearances to promote TPT

  • Work directly with Marketing staff to create visual identities, marketing pieces, fundraising materials for productions and theatre public relations

  • Coordinate mailings, correspondence and social media blasts

YOU SHOULD HAVE:

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Theatre, Arts or Nonprofit Management

  • Experience leading theatrical production teams

  • Strong record of in managing a professional theater, both front and back-of-house

  • Experience with financial documents and budget development and management

  • Demonstrated experience developing new theatrical works.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of the regional and national artistic communities

  • Excellent time management and delegation skills

  • Strong financial accounting and management skills including budgeting

  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written

  • Strong strategic and analytical skills, with the ability to interpret information quickly and accurately to implement directives

  • Strong leadership and people management skills

  • Extensive knowledge of theatrical union contracts (Actors Equity Association, SDC)

  • Experience with Salsa and/or other CRM software
